Meet Waffles: From Zoo Sketchbook to Amazon Top New Release

Waffles began as a simple sketch during my visits to the zoo — a curious pelican with personality, posture, and presence. Over time, those sketches became watercolor paintings, and those paintings became prints that children and parents kept asking about at art fairs.

Again and again, I heard the same question:
“Is there a story about him?”

That question stayed with me.

In this video, I share the journey of Waffles Is Not a Chicken — from early sketchbook studies and on-site watercolor work to collaborating with author Melissa Morrison and shaping a gentle, humorous children’s picture book created entirely with traditional watercolor illustration.

Waffles is a story about curiosity, awareness, and learning who is safe to trust — told without agendas, lessons, or noise. Just a warm, visual story created the same way children’s books have been made for generations.

I’m grateful to everyone who encouraged Waffles along the way — especially the children who believed he already had a story worth telling.
